Spirit Week began this Sunday with Dress Like a Man day. Some of our young women drew mustaches, goatees and Asima wore an eye-lined beard and looked like a little thug with a sideways baseball cap and a little bit of a swagger. It was a little odd watching my students, the ones who didn’t dress up and continued to wear their salwaar kameezes, sitting alongside their male counterparts.
What was most interesting was that without the drawn-on facial hair, the young ladies who dressed up like dudes, looked a lot like how we dress at home. T-shirts or button-ups with jeans. Without the fussiness of covering our bosoms or the load chaotic colors of local fabrics.
It even made me a little homesick.
